And you thought YOU were a young mother

Another HELP story . . . better pull out the tissues.

One place HELP international works in El Salvador is the CIPI orphanage. CIPI, which stands for "Centro Infantil de Protección Inmediata" (Center for the Immediate Protection of the Youth), houses orphans and young mothers. HELP volunteers have spent many hours preparing activities, visiting the orphans, teaching life-skills, bringing them books, etc. An especially meaningful project was a support group HELP established for the young mothers at CIPI. Some of these mothers are as young as eleven, many of them victims of rape. They live at the CIPI with their babies temporarily, until they can find support from family or be prepared to live on their own. The mothers enjoy spending time with HELP volunteers, because of the non-judegemental love and encouragement they provide.

2008 volunteer, Stephanie Blood, had the opportunity to serve these girls and said that it was an unforgettable experience. “The girls were so sweet. They took care of each other and each others babies and shared everything.”

She and other volunteers planned weekly activities and taught valuable life skills including: infant care, nutrition, empowerment, and goal-setting. One day they had an activity with fruits and vegetables where they taught the girls the importance of healthy diets. Afterwards they made faces with the fruits, vegetables, and peanut butter. Another time, they planned a day of water balloon volleyball. HELP volunteers took care of the babies while the girls played.

Stephanie says, “Sometimes it was good to give the girls opportunities to just have fun and be girls which was so great for them because they have had to deal with so many huge responsibilities at such a young age.”

Of all of the activities they did together, one that stood out to 2008 volunteer, Whitney Smith, was square-foot gardening. It gave the mothers a sense of accomplishment and a skill they can use for the rest of their lives.

"We wanted the young mothers to feel like they owned the project, so we helped gather the supplies, showed them what to do, and let them do it,” said Whitney. “They were so excited and really worked hard! The girls dug out a spot for the garden, sifted sand, made a rock wall around the garden, put in posts, tied string to partition the garden into sections, and planted and watered the seeds. It was really fun to see the girls succeed."

The gardening technique uses one-third of the water and land and produces three times the yield of traditional gardening. Using this method, the girls have a way to grow vegetables for themselves and have excess to sell in the market.
The most important thing volunteers did there may have simply been talking to these young mothers, offering them love and support and letting the girls know that somebody cares about them. Stephanie said of her experience: “I wish I had stayed longer. I would wake up every morning thinking ‘I can’t believe this is my life right now!’ Every day you wake up ready to serve and just see what you can do for other people. It was the happiest I had been in years!”

Big Changes

When Corbin was 8 months old he was hospitalized for RSV and I started working at HELP International. That was a big change in my life - I became working mom (if part time counts as that), I finally got paid to travel, and I am still working with them 5 years later. When Cody was 8 months old, I broke my ankle, which was, obviously painful, but mostly just super difficult as a mother of two small kiddos. On top of that we moved from our duplex in Provo where we had been for five years to our home in Spanish Fork, where we are currently. So this has me wondering what big changes may be in store now that Colton is 8 months old?? Hopefully something good. At any rate, here's a look at my cute little 8 month old:
I can crawl.

I have 5 teeth (two fangs, three on bottom and one more coming soon)

I eat anything and everything.

I LOVE taking a bath and make sure mom knows how upset I am when I have to get out.

I am a happy boy!

Happy Birthday to my honey!

It's nice to know that Russ will always be two years older than me. This birthday was fairly insignificant, but I think Russ had fun. He got to go into the desert (one of his favorite things), we went on a date to his favorite restaurant (which doesn't happen very often - the date or him picking), and yesterday we had a little party with the fam at his parents. My nephew's birthday is the day after Russ', so we celebrated both together. Love you, honey. Happy Birthday!

Chugga chugga choo choo

It's hard to find fun things to do in the winter with just me and the boys, so I was happy when I heard about the train show today at Thanksgiving Point. Trains are not really my thing and I wouldn't say the my boys LOVE them, but it was pretty cool and we were quite impressed. I know, there's alot of pics and they don't really show how detailed and cool everything was, but you get the idea.

For all you Harry Potter Fans . . . (sorry I didn't actually get a picture of the Hogwart's Express that was going around.) This display was huge and totally cool. It even had Hagrid's house, dragons, etc, etc.

We loved the Lego display. This was really an amazing collection and obviously took alot of work. It had several different parts that I didn't even get pictures of. These pictures don't really do it justice. It was cool.

They really did have fun despite the dull look on their faces.

Petroglyphs in the Desert

This is what my husband wanted from his parents for his birthday - horseback riding in the middle of nowhere. I think they all had a little fun. (What am I going to do when they aren't around to go with him anymore? Hopefully by then my boys will be old enough. I'm not that great with horses - or any animal for that matter). It did look kind of pretty though. Enjoy the pics.

Snow Day

Cody love, love, loves playing in the snow. Nearly everyday he tells me he needs to go outside and shovel (I hope that desire lasts until his shoveling is actually helpful). At any rate, it is really fun to watch him discover the snow and really experience/enjoy it for the first time this year.

This is him refusing to come inside.

I've lost it!

Somehow in changing my blog template and background I lost everything that was really important to me - namely the links to all my friends' blogs. And of course I don't save info like that, it was all on my blog, so why would I have the need to save it anywhere else. So if you are reading this, please leave a comment so I can find your blog again without having to do some crazy searching.
(And for all my blog stalkers out there, this would be a perfect time to make yourself known! Or if you are reading my blog, but have not invited my to read yours, time to send the invite!)

Being a mom is seriously gross

So if you are not a mom, or if it has been awhile, or if you are easily grossed out, you probably do not want to read this post. Yesterday was seriously crazy. So we go to church at 1pm and most Sundays it takes me all morning to get myself and my three boys properly dressed, fed and out the door. So we start with breakfast - Cream of Wheat. Why I feed this to my kids, I don't know, because it is so annoying to try to clean up. Colton also enjoyed his usual spread of graham crackers and other things that get really smooshy and stuck in his hair. So in the end I strip down the two youngest and we head up to the bath. Before I get Colton to the tub, he spits up. Normal, but now that he is eating food and not just milk, it is really chunky and gross. Clean it up, move on. Now Corbin and Cody are in the tub in my bathroom while I bathe Colton in his little tub in the boys bathroom. As I am washing Colton, I'm like "what the heck?" and I realize he spit up again and there is all this junk in the water. Gross. So I pull him out and try to keep him wrapped up as I empty the little tub thing, rinse it and refill it with one hand. As I am doing this, Corbin comes in naked and starts the water in their tub. Sometimes he does this because he and Cody are not getting along and he wants to bathe by himself, so I, being the sensitive mother that I am, quickly reprimand him for running through the house all wet and tell him to get back in the other tub. To which he responds, "but Cody is throwing poop everywhere!" Ahhhh! So I take the freezing cold, crying baby, and yank Cody out of the tub in my bathroom, where, yes, there is now poop all over the floor. So now Cody and Corbin are in the tub in their bathroom, I finish washing Colton, get him dressed and in his bed - all the while yelling at the boys to stay in the tub until I can come wash their hair with actual shampoo instead of the half bar of soap they have used. Ughh. So Colton goes to sleep. One down. I go quickly clean up the poop. Gross. Then get the boys, washed, dried, lotioned and dressed for church and send them down for some quality TV time. Then back up to scrub the carpet and clean the tub. Gross, gross, gross. Finally, I get to take a shower and get dressed. I make the boys lunch and I let them have a little picnic in the living room (yes, this is foreshadowing). I get Colton up from his nap and let him play while I pack everything for church - books, snacks, diapers, etc etc etc. Just as I go to put Colton in his carseat, I realize he has pooped clear up his back. Ahhhh! I so wanted to be on time to church for once! So I run upstairs, try to get his clothes off without getting it in his hair, do the quick wash down, find new church clothes and throw the dirty ones somewhere where I will remember to wash them out later. Gross. While trying to get the boys in the car I step on a piece of cheese, which squishes nicely into my hose. I rip my hose off and throw everyone in the car. We're finally off. I forgot to mention at some point in the morning I also sat on a toilet seat covered in pee. Yuck. And to top off my wonderful morning, I get to church, get my three rowdy kids into the pew, sit down, and realize I have a small smudge of baby poo on my skirt. Yeah, like I said, totally gross.

Free Date

It's true. I'm cheap. So I love weddings (well, most of them), because its a great date night for me and my hubby! Come on, you have to agree, we have to get dressed up, we get free food and entertainment and I get to dance all night without going to some crappy club. And if I were a drinker, I'm sure I would love the open bar. Last month Russ couldn't go so Corbin got to be my date, but this past weekend we went to the wedding of our firefighter friend JJ and his wife Reggan. It was way too much fun. Plus it was a date with lots of fun friends! These pics may only be interesting to the people that were there, so feel free to skip if so inclined. :)

Highlights of 2008 - Christmas in Denver

Of course, I have to post some pics of Christmas. I really didn't want to make this long and boring, but we had a great time and I did take LOTS of pictures. We got to go to Denver this year (thanks Mom!). We haven't been there for Christmas Day since Corbin was two, so I was happy to be with my family again. So here it is, there was too many to choose from, so you get a slide show. I took almost 500 pics, so just know that you are getting the very shortened version. Enjoy! Hope you had a good holiday too!
