Garden Surprise

So I've had these plants growing in my "garden" (aka the multiple flower beds that have yet to be planted), and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. They just started on their own a month or so ago. At first I thought they were weeds, but Russ assured me they were not. He thinks they are pumpkins, I thought they looked like watermelons, but now I'm not so sure of either. So all of you green thumbs, any ideas?

After downloading these pics, I realized you can't really tell how big these things are. They're only about the size of tennis balls and they don't seem to be getting much bigger than that. A few of them randomly have the yellow stripe. Weird, huh?

It's something in the pumpkin family - maybe some squash?

Definitely a squash...cook it up and see how it tastes. :)

Looks like a mix of yellow squash and cucumber. Maybe a squashcumber. Or a cucuash. Or a cusqumber. Or a squacumbrash. One of those, for sure.

Cusqumber is delicous fried with oregano and vinegar.

Okay, I have NO CLUE what that could be, but this I know: squashes are native to North America. They grow wild here. This is where zucchini, crookneck, winter, and all the other squashes started. So that might explain why it just grew itself without you having planted it!

ps. makes you wonder if Adam and Eve ate zucchini and crookneck, doesn't it? :)
